The peloton in the Giro Donne travelled to Canelli for a stage over 102,7 kilometres. Mavi Garcia was in the front again and took another top-10 result.
Several riders tried their luck in the first part of the sixth stage, but there was no successful attempt. On the Castino the peloton thinned out, but no significant gaps were made in the front. Spanish champion Mavi Garcia was in the front of the bunch all the time. On the short and steep Calosso Annemiek van Vleuten launched an attack.
The wearer of the maglia rosa took a 20 second lead and was on her way to the stage win. In the background Garcia was in the first chase group behind Van Vleuten. The Spanish champion aimed for a spot on the stage podium, but in the final kilometres a second group came back. In the uphill sprint Garcia finished seventh, just like one day earlier in stage 5.
Sports director Giorgia Bronzini was satisfied with Garcia`s performance. “It was a really strong ride of Mavi again. It was too bad the second group came back in the final kilometres, otherwise she could be on the stage podium possibly. I am happy with Mavi`s performance and how the team is riding her. Tomorrow is a chance to do something in the GC, so we will try something for sure.”
In the overall classification Van Vleuten strengthened her lead once again. Garcia is now in fifth place, but still has the overall podium in sight.
