The seventh stage in the Giro Donne was the last real mountain stage of this edition. Mavi Garcia was on the hunt for a good result again and attacked on the second last climb.
The peloton headed from Albenga to Alassio over 109,1 kilometres on Thursday. Four climbs were waiting for the riders, with the Passo del Ginestro as first one. After some breakaway attempts got reeled in, it was Mavi Garcia who attacked on the Colle Paravenna. The Spanish champion took a 20 seconds lead on a select chase group.
At a kilometre from the summit Annemiek van Vleuten launched a counter attack and bridged to Garcia with two other riders in her wheel. Our Spanish champion tried to hold on, but had to let go just before the summit and dropped back into a chase group. On the final climb Garcia tried to limit her losses. She finished tenth, almost two minutes behind stage winner Van Vleuten.
In the overall classification Garcia dropped to a seventh place. Tomorrow is a rest day followed by a weekend on Sardinia.
